Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance – Harold Choate

Welcome and Introduction of Guests

Officer Reports:

  • Vice-President – George Campagna- We’ll be at PMC next month. We were supposed to have our meeting at the sawmill this month but the owner, Tommy Treuil, passed away unexpectedly in March. The September meeting will also be at PMC, however, the Festool presentation is in doubt.
  • Secretary – Harold Choate- I was absent last month so I don’t have the details for a report.
  • Treasurer – Rick Albrecht- Contact Rick for details.
  • Webmaster – Geoff Michelli-absent. Richard advised he had called Geoff and was supposed to hear back about progress on the website.
  • Community Service- Lee Owens- Harold Choate reported on the Girl Scout project he and Bob Bewick worked on. The Girl Scouts from Westdale Elementary, 4th Grade class, wanted to build something their teachers wanted. They asked the teachers and were told a podium and a printer stand. Their leader, Frenika Sam, contacted the club and got in touch with Harold. The girls raised the money for material. Harold sketched up a podium and a printer stand. They got approved. Bob and Harold cut out the pieces and took them to Westdale for the girls to assemble. Their favorite part was spreading glue with their fingers! They painted the pieces themselves. The color they used was, what else, Girl Scout green! Volunteers of America has 2 ongoing projects. Brian Staus please tell us about the table. Brian- the table is done. We are going to deliver and set it up right after the meeting today. Please come help if you have time. The 2nd thing is Lee Owens and Rick Albrecht installed a 3 x 5 sign the VOA had. It was just a small job but we took care of it for them. The next project is for IRIS, an abused woman’s shelter. They want us to build some lockable cabinets for their dining area. The cabinets will be used to store personal items. There are 24 of the cabinets. We’ll use paint grade plywood and will paint them before delivery. Detailed drawings will be provided so each team’s cabinets with match the others. IRIS will also want a pantry later on, but that is a separate project. HAART has contacted us about a future project. They want 10-12 desks with chairs for their AIDS victim family facility. Simple student desk and chair. This will be done after the cabinets for IRIS.
  • Education Outreach – Open- We need someone to fill this position. Please let me know if you will take the job.

New and Ongoing Club Business

  • Girl Scouts- See above
  • Festool- We’re trying to get a presentation lined up for the September meeting. Richard is getting 2 different stories. Basically the Festool rep has to justify coming in on a Saturday. The rep is concerned about the number of people that will show up. He did a Makita demo earlier in the year and after all the preliminary work, nobody showed up. Guy/PMC is concerned about doing a presentation on Festool stuff and then not being able to get things people may want in a reasonable amount of time. According to Guy they are about 7 months behind in filling orders. Richard asked us to advise him if there is enough interest for us to schedule an evening presentation during the week?
  • Bird Houses- We’re getting close to a time when we’re going to have to decide about getting birdhouses made for the Swamp Festival. It’s a little early but Richard said he would call to see if a decision had been made about doing the Festival. The last time we did one it was mid-summer before a decision had been made. We need to think about where to get lumber and be sure we don’t interfere with the projects Lee is lining up. Richard has 37 birdhouses in storage so we’re not starting from zero. We need about 200 kits per the comments from the group. Harold offered to contact Holmes Building Materials to see if they’ll donate lumber again. We’ll assume we need 200 kits.

Members Questions/Concerns

Safety Topic– Richard mentioned he had been watching YouTube videos and was appalled to see people cutting small pieces on table saws without using push sticks or other means of keeping their fingers and hands away from the blade. Please, please use push sticks to avoid serious injury using table saws.

Skill Topic: Harold Choate – Shop Jigs

  • Item or project to show and/or describe for “Show-and-Tell”

I retired from a career in industrial sales in 2000. One of the first things I did after retiring was to build a raised panel corner desk using oak.
